ABOUT
Popular Korean series Squid Game showcasing a tale of economic divide between the rich and the working class.
Besides, the design of the set showcases references from various elements of art and architecture to explore. One such key element is the stairwell used to access each of the games in the show.
Escher’s brilliance lies in using this geometric paradox as more than a visual trick. Rather than presenting a single impossible form, he expands it into an entire world governed by conflicting laws of gravity. Figures walk calmly up and down staircases that defy one another, each obeying a different gravitational direction, all within the same enclosed structure. Through arched openings at the tops of the stairs, Escher offers views of a peaceful, sunlit exterior, reinforcing the illusion that this bizarre interior is nonetheless part of a larger, serene reality. In this world, every direction can be “up,” and every path can also be “down,” underscoring Escher’s recurring theme: reality is not fixed but shifts depending on perspective.

The Model

Inspired by both the set design and M. C. Escher’s original artwork, the model was constructed and rendered using architectural design tools. Studio lighting techniques were carefully applied to highlight and accentuate key areas, enhancing depth, form, and the overall spatial illusion.

" With its oversized sets to make the players seem tiny and the fantastical, bright and psychedelic backdrops, you can see how Dong-hyuk may have been influenced by Caroll's Alice and Wonderland. "
Final Output

The overall color palette is directly inspired by the iconic sets of the TV show using bold, playful hues to recreate its distinctive visual identity. The spatial composition is organized into a series of interconnected nooks and platforms, each thoughtfully designed to pay homage to one of the five games that were telecast. Every zone incorporates game specific, symbols, and spatial cues that reference the challenges that were faced by the players in the original series.
To enhance the visual storytelling, the graphics from the game were also included in the same areas. Not only did these add layers of detail and familiarity but also help differentiate each area while maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic.
