ABOUT

Stadium design commissioned for University in Chennai with a seating capacity of close to 12,000 seats to be built to host events of various sporting events and college events.

The challenge was to ensure that the grounds were dynamic enough to cater to all sporting activities ranging from basketball to badminton without compromising the overall floor plate.

The space would also function as a congregation hall for graduation ceremonies and other important events.

CONCEPT

CONCEPT

Being a medical college, we took inspiration for its structure from the human spine. A central member supports the entire roof along the longer axis, and steps down towards the ground with its skeletal members.

The access road in front is raised to allow students to walk under uninterrupted onto the front ground directly from the university building. The sports club will have sloped roofs that rise gradually from the ground to allow one to walk under and over the building.

Instead of a dome roof, we explore a saddle roof, which give us greater intimacy within the stadium from a viewer's perspective.

Smaller air conditioning volume. And a unique shape to explore. As there is very little space available on the longer sides for the structure to step down, inspiration was taken from the human stance in a tug of war game and design our steel columns with a cable stay structure supporting the main spine.

The roof form can the transition to the other side of the ground that house the various sporting clubs, forming a continuously ascending curved mass.
